Proper insulation creates a dry, comfortable, energy-efficient interior environment while helping prevent issues with condensation and moisture. However, it takes the right insulation tools and materials to ensure proper insulation installation. Insulation installation that is done right deters air and water leaks while maintaining energy efficiency.

At Yvon Building Supply, we are your favourite place for insulation supply in Ontario, offering a full range of insulation products, accessories, tools, and materials to ensure proper installation. Here, we share the most crucial information regarding insulation to achieve optimized energy efficiency and avoid moisture-related damage, including wood rot, mildew, and dangerous mould.

The type of insulation used for your project as well as the proper application of the insulation are paramount to achieving temperature regulation, comfort, and longevity in your space. Our insulation experts are happy to share our pro tips to help you make the right decisions.

When looking for cost-effective insulation tools and materials, our team can advise you on what you’ll need, whether you visit one of our seven locations in Ontario or shop for insulation online.

Types of Insulation Materials Available

Insulation materials continue to improve performance with a growing number of options available. However, the two most tried and true insulation choices are fiberglass and Rockwool. They are affordable, relatively easy to install, and provide high R-values to eliminate air leaks that reduce energy efficiency.

R-values or resistance values measure a material’s thermal resistance based on how well it keeps heat from moving through a structure. In Southern Ontario, the R-Value should be between R-22 to R-28 and R-28 to R-32 or higher in Northern Ontario. Selecting the right material for your needs will ensure optimal comfort and minimal energy waste.

Fiberglass Insulation

Fiberglass insulation is the most common insulation material, making it easier to find and more affordable than Rockwool. It is made of spun or blown molten glass with recycled glass content ranging between 20% and 60%, making it a fairly eco-friendly choice. It comes in blanket/ batt and roll as well as loose-fill formats. We recommend blanket fiberglass for DIY projects as it does not require a special blowing machine for installation.

Rockwool Insulation

Rockwool or mineral insulation is made of natural minerals such as diabase or basalt. It is even more eco-friendly than fiberglass as it contains an average of 75% recycled content. Similar to fiberglass, it is offered in blanket and loose-fill formats. What sets it apart from fiberglass is that it can provide a higher R-value. Many installers prefer rockwool over fiberglass as it is stiffer and won’t bend during installation, making it easier for one person to install. The downside to rockwool is that it is harder to find and more expensive. However, at Yvon, rockwool insulation is part of our regular inventory and is available at competitive prices.

Essential Insulation Tools

The right tools make any job easier and allow you to complete projects with less time and effort. Proper insulation tools also ensure you reduce waste and minimize airborne particles with precision cuts when handling insulation materials. The essential insulation tools for the job include:

  • Measuring tools, including a tape measure to measure wall/ceiling space and a straightedge yardstick to measure insulation for proper fit
  • Proper long serrated knife for cutting thick blanket insulation quickly and evenly
  • A stapling tool to easily install vapour barriers to framing studs
  • A putty knife to force batting into tight spaces

These insulation supplies help ensure a tight fit to improve energy efficiency and reduce the risk of leaks. Other materials you’ll need include caulk to finish the job, sealing the lines along the floor and ceiling plates and any other gaps where you are likely to experience air leaks.

You can also use foam insulation to fill larger gaps. We highly recommend wearing gloves, goggles, long sleeves, and long pants to avoid getting tiny particles in your eyes or skin.

Benefits of Proper Insulation

Proper insulation offers many benefits to your home or business, including:

  • Energy savings: Whether you’re a home or business owner, energy savings help you save money. With rising costs today, every cent counts. Proper insulation improves energy efficiency by reducing heat transference on exterior walls, the basement and the roof.

  • Comfort: Enjoy higher levels of comfort through improved energy efficiency. This is essential for those using the property who deserve a safe, comfortable environment. Insulation overcomes the impact of sweltering heat or freezing cold weather outside.

  • Reduced noise pollution: Proper insulation reduces noise transference not just from the exterior but also in the interior between floors. This allows people to remain focused, get better sleep and generally enjoy a more calm environment.

  • Reduced risk of moisture damage: Properly installed insulation uses vapour barriers that help control moisture and condensation. As a result, you can reduce the risk of moisture damage as well as mould growth that can make you sick.

Condensation might seem harmless, but it creates enough water and moisture to rot wood over time, while also creating the ideal environment for mould and mildew to thrive.

  • Reduced carbon footprint: Insulation reduces your carbon dioxide emissions. Using eco-friendly materials with recycled content improves energy efficiency, reduces demand on local energy sources, and reduces waste produced by non-recycled materials.
